  • This Is Going to Hurt: What Your Doctor Doesn't Say Can Cost You   11 years 9 weeks ago

The most likely thing to get messed up by a doctor is your bill. We are not trained in most cases to run a business, but of course, we do after we leave school. I took additional business courses in medical school, so I know my practice well, and monitor that aspect closely. However, most doctors have no idea what the bill is for the services they render. That is usually handled by other people.

  • This Is Going to Hurt: What Your Doctor Doesn't Say Can Cost You   11 years 9 weeks ago

My mechanic calls me and suggests that it is time for an oil change or a tune-up (I do these myself, by the way, and have never had him do them), my dentist calls to tell me it is time for a cleaning and check-up too. Sure she was trying to get business, that is her livelihood. I know nothing about the quality of your physician, and I cannot defend what you say were misdiagnoses, but if you thought she was so bad, why did you keep going back?? Sometimes patients don't remember things very clearly, though. Just yesterday I saw a patient that complained that I had referred her to a specialist in blood disorders and insists I told her she had leukemia, which she did not have. That is, of course, preposterous because there is no way on the limited data I get as a Primary Care that I could have given her that diagnosis. I also distinctly remember the conversation in which I suggested the consult. She wanted to know why I wanted to refer her there. I replied that the most concerning thing that she could have was leukemia, but it could be normal for her, and it needs to be checked out further. (I would never tell someone they have leukemia, I'm not a Hematologist or Oncologist) The more you describe this situation, the more it sounds like your view is rather self-serving and narrow-minded.

  • This Is Going to Hurt: What Your Doctor Doesn't Say Can Cost You   11 years 9 weeks ago

As a Primary Care doctor, I did not choose the way things are billed. This is the system I inherited when I became a doctor, and it was set by politicians and bureaucrats, not doctors. Do we have to bill this way? Sure, it is the way we get paid for our job. I hate it. And, by the way, many other doctors (most, I think) do too. The system is supposed to be designed (again, not by doctors) to reimburse physicians more money for more work done, but some patients demand more time for a physical than others, and the reimbursement is the same. The rules say (rules, once again not designed by the physician, and that this physician was following) that if there is an acute complaint in addition to a well patient visit, as there was in this case, that the physician should submit an additional charge. Perhaps physicians should get reimbursed a set dollar amount for each problem addressed, and get paid according to a set amount based on how much is determined he should make for addressing that problem, the same way a mechanic gets reimbursed so much for a tune-up, so much for an oil change, so much for changing the alternator, etc., and gets paid for each job he does. That way, if a patient comes in for high blood pressure, kidney disease, cholesterol issues, and diabetes, the physician would get paid a separate fee for addressing each of these. That would certainly have satisfied this patient since they would have known that if they gave the extra complaint to the doctor that it would include an extra charge. Many Primary Care Physicians are going to the Concierge Medicine model, where patients pay a fee (usually $1500 per year) to be a patient of the physician, then they get a certain amount of time with the physician as dictated by his policies.

  • As Supreme Court Hears Challenge to ALEC Voting Bill, Two More States Introduce It   11 years 9 weeks ago

Why is it that the mainstream media has not brought information forward about ALEC and that most people in this country have no idea what ALEC is or what it does.. much less know that ALEC is NOT considered a lobby group and is exempt from lobby requirements... while lobbying away.. unfettered and protected. WHY WHY WHY!! What is wrong with this news report? What is wrong with this legal acceptance of something that is a illegal twisting of the rules of lobby.

    SPN

When I was conversing with a Facebook "friend" in Europe with same surname as me, I saw another comment/post from person with same surname stating there were none of same name in the States... so I looked at her FB page and to my chargrin, she works at SPN. I knew about them after having lived in WI as socialist democratic city/state growing up, and with all that went on with our Governor (Scooter), I read/researched about all the organziations that were sending propaganda about Walker's agenda. I never "friended" her and let people in Europe (one a very nice young gay man) what her views were.

There are many such hidden groups (and I beleive thay are hate groups) that have been around for 40+ years, all because people like Koch's daddy become less relevant when his John Birch crumbled. Koch daddy and his boys then began their crusade to control churches, people and then governments after they hated Eisenhower building the middle class/closing the gap between the rich/poor. So we try to make ALEC less powerful, the .1%ers will just move more $$ into one of these other groups. We must be viligant!

  • Efforts to Deliver "Kill Shot" to Paid Sick Leave Tied to ALEC   11 years 9 weeks ago

It bothers me that the link associating the National Restaurant association to ALEC is the Sourcewatch page which is full of dead links, out of date positions that now differ and links to sites that are nonresonsive and don't even appear to have file trees like what's in the urls. We're supposed to be the side with the facts on our side. Anyone with half a brain from the other side could rip the Sourcewatch page to pieces.

  • The Steubenville Case: Social Media Plays Role in the Prosecution of a Rape Case   11 years 9 weeks ago

WTF does that have to do with the rape/sexual assault case? Perhaps you think the meaning of "defamation" is some fancy definition for the word "rape"? Because that would certainly be in keeping with the small-town attitude described. A place where learning simple English in school takes a back seat to the football program -- 'FOOTBALL! We bad'

  • Consumers Allege Perdue's "Humane" Poultry Labels Are "False and Deceptive"   11 years 9 weeks ago

This is just animal rights cult mentality whereby they want to take away your right to eat meat totally and for right now drive up the costs to the point that you cannot afford to eat meat. This is dangerous to all human beings as meat is needed for active VB12 which helps your brain develop and to think rationally. Lack of VB12 the active kind found only in meat products causes irrational thinking and overly emotional response to situations is dangerous for all human beings. You only get inactive VB12 from a few plants and bacteria and this inactive kind does not work in the human body. You need to know that 16 infants from vegan parents have died even though these parents were told their children needed meat protein. These children starved to death. Their extreme vegan parents would not feed them any protein based foods based upon the PeTA and HSUS guidelines. This is a war they are imposing on all Americans and their goal is the elimination of our food source.

i cannot make it to Denver, but curious if anyone reading this might want to help me use a combination of a new technology and a new face-to-face organizing technique to enable a doubling or tripling of houseparties nationwide every 2-3 weeks over a 3-4 month period to climax in 40,000 houseparties, at least $8MM, and thousands of dedicated volunteers to bring democracy to America (by getting public funding of elections, removing corporate personhood, and stopping electronic voting). I think i have a good go to plan for execution, but need the team. The weekend of July 4th would be the perfect kickoff time, poetically speaking.

Scientists have certainly been known to skew figures and base opinion slanted in favor of the industry whom pays them. Expert testimony is routinely given in courts, again, paid by a company to a scientist or doctor that will provide desired editorial toward swaying a judge or jury to favorable outcome.
What makes you think (all) scientists are ethical?

This is a classic David vs. Goliath issue that the people need to win.As our planet is continually raped by oil, coal, and natural gas our planet needs an army to defend it.The oil industry is a well oiled machine no pun intended because the propaganda they perpetrate on a daily basis.Funny thing is the taxpayers subsidize them but they never share the profit.Fossil fuel will be the downfall of our planet and the GOP backs everything they want. When yellow journalism being done by fox news with their staple of climate change deniers use god as there tool to deceive simple minds is cause enough to be very alarmed. When greed trumps common sense should cause great concern among the environmentalist. When the propaganda machine they run call activist eco terrorist is the disgusting formula the fuel companies use.As our democracy is not a democracy anymore due to the corporations being given the same rights as a person shows that the supreme court is not balanced and has been bought and payed for by polluters such as exxon mobil bp chevron and many others in the fossil fuel industry. If things don't change soon the human race will cease to exist and it won't be the revelation it will be human greed.

  • Chemical Industry Clout Delays EPA Regulation of Hexavalent Chromium   11 years 9 weeks ago

Nick, you're so *clever*! More clever than informed, it seems.

Large corporations don't settle lawsuits they can win: they owe that to their shareholders. Further, settlements usually have gag clauses attached -- because the corporations don't want people to know how much they actually paid out.

And yes, "science" *does* lie. Please research funder bias, and you'll find the many ways in which studies are designed to provide the "desired" result. Please research the process for licensing new chemicals (including pesticides, drugs and vaccines) and you'll see that that process is far from being impartial. And ... guess who's getting favored in all that partiality? Hint: it's not "the taxpayer" or "the common citizen." Or you -- unless it's your job to troll along e-mail lists like this and plump for the corps.

  • Detroit's First Day under an "Emergency Financial Manager"   11 years 9 weeks ago

No, that's not what he is saying. What he is saying is that the black voters of Detroit placed a higher priority on the race of election candidates than on the competency and qualifications of those candidates. They elected people over and over based on race, instead of competency. So, they got what they deserved, which was a legacy of incompetent, corrupt elected officials, ultimately leading to the situation they find themselves in now.

DemocracyNow! has done some great coverage of this issue also, FYI.
Thanks for this article. The social media problems with slandering people is huge. If people start to get charged and sentenced with criminal behavior who use this to hurt others, perhaps this will start to let up?
Just not sure, but sure shows that this really gets people stirred up if they have the info in front of them.
