Excellent post Brendan. ALEC is trying to lull us into complacency, but reporting like this keeps us on our toes.

  • FDA Ready to Approve Frankenfish Despite Fishy Science   11 years 11 weeks ago

We don't fully understand how our bodies will react to this experimental train wreck they prepare to perpetrate on us. While a thing might look right at certain Micro-levels of inspection, we must not forget that evolution took millions of years fine tuning the enzymes and other digestive properties of our systems to handle natural whole foods a given way. It works a specific way on specific things, a near copy isn't always good enough (Ask any chemist if "close" is good enough). Look at how many people can't handle the new strains of wheat and gluten(more people have grown intolerant of it in the recent years) it's almost identical .. but not quite. Bottom line while I stipulate to the problems of feeding an ever growing population as critical. We must be exceedingly careful as to how we do it. Lest we be the engines of our own extinction.

Sloppy science disturbs me deeply, and this process reeks of sloppy scientific oversight by the FDA. I would encourage the FDA to reconsider their decision and apply a complete peer-reviewed process using top geneticists and othe allied science professionals.

    Dear Anonymous:

Your baseless assertions give us an opportunity to make it clear that what is misleading, on your part, is telling the public there is no such thing as armor-piercing bullets (the more widely known name for the popular name referenced in the article because the bullets are preferred by some for their capacity to pierce the body armor of police).

Plainly, such bullets exist and plainly the ALEC/NRA legislation would not permit a city to bar their use.

Next time you comment on one of our articles, we'll expect you to cite actual facts or you can expect it to be deleted for being baseless.

The approach to letting us believe that our Congress is NOT influenced by the tiny fraction of one percent of our citizens that max out their political contributions that I like is this: Let citizens give $100 coupons to their choice of candidates for their congressional districts to any candidate who agrees to accept only those funds. Prof. Lawrence Lessig and Root Strikers seem to support such a plan. You may be able to find a video of a talk by Lessig that discusses such a plan.

There is no such thing as cop-killer bullets, unless of course you mean any bullet fired at a cop. There is no kind of bullet that just kills police. I think the bullets you are referring to are hollow point bullets, which the cops themselves carry.

I know this is just your little patch of the web to spew your rhetoric, but this is just too stupid to let go.

  • "Friendly Reminder": Fox's Unbalanced Ethics Threaten Democracy   11 years 12 weeks ago

Using your brain is fine, but it could stand some fine tuning. Your wording, "...that was released and confirmed by ABC, NBC, MSNBC and the like..." obscures rather than clarifies how this happened: the video was first aired by MSNBC, then aired again by others without challenge; that is not the same as "released and confirmed by..." all of them. And who is "the like"?

Mandating hospitals to perform abortions regardless of the religious orientation of said hospitals?"

A statement in the form of an unanswered question is a technique often used to create misleading impressions. Specifics, please.

  • Are Seniors Paying Attention to Paul Ryan's Medicare Plan?   11 years 12 weeks ago

Tail end of the Baby-Boomers and as we anticipated for years, Medicare is looking bleak for us! The recession took our savings, so, if we did have diversified assets we could liquidate them to survive, along with selling everything but the kitchen sink, to save our homes, and eat! Health care now, takes a chunk out of our checks, with a $2,000.00 deductable before they pay a dime on anything, including office visits and they get a nice premium every month too stick in their pockets, and no money out on thier part, no wonder the insurance companies have so much power they are rich off of us! But, to be responsible your scared to death not to have a policy. Scary, scary stuff going on in our beloved country!
Middle clas gone. You have the rich and then the poor.

  • "Friendly Reminder": Fox's Unbalanced Ethics Threaten Democracy   11 years 12 weeks ago

Does anyone remember the DOCTORED video in the wake of the Adam Lanza shooting that was released and confirmed by ABC, NBC, MSNBC, and the like? But that's fine, it's commentary, I forgot. I apologize for using my brain.
The Obama Admn. has been shown to use loopholes in laws to further the President's increasingly authoritarian agenda. Mandating hospitals to perform abortions regardless of the religious orientation of said hospitals? I don't claim to be any sort of intellectual by any means, but the hypocrisy of the left on fact-checking and transparency matters pertaining to media and Presidential Administrations is utterly astounding.

    Your's truly,

You may want to check out organizations like MovetoAmend.org. Constitutional amendment is the surest way to provide that corporations are not people and money is not political speech. Public financing of elections would be a big help, too.

  • U.S. Supreme Court Considers ALEC Voting Bill; Could Have Broader Implications for Voting Rights   11 years 12 weeks ago

The justice system in the USA is based on the premise that you are innocent unless shown to be otherwise.
This law turns this around and assumes you are guilty unless you can prove you are not to the authorities.

There is virtually no voter fraud committed. This law tries to correct a non-existent wrong. Unless you can show that crimes are being committed all over the place, let the people vote; it is our right.

    Cheers all.

What will it take to get legislators elected into our state government who
will work for the public benefit. The current group should be
recalled, most notably the governor and her henchmen. How did this
southwestern state become soooo red. It's high time for Sen. McCain to
go and, again, replace him with someone who will work for the people.
Also, how in the world did Rep. Flake get elected? He's on a par with
Senators McCain and Kyle (who recently left to continue to 'rip off' the public by working for the criminal pharmaceutical companies, right
    through those revolving doors.)

I've been given to believe and understand that these freedom loving righties want less government control and intervention ... state's rights, free markets, and all that generic spin stuff.

Do you see what's happening folks? It falls under the = swatting flies while the gnats eat our #$$ out = saying. The so called Republicans are taking over piece by piece - at the state levels. Who needs Washington - simply revise all the states to suit your wishes.

Think about it - the Koch Brothers, Pete Peterson, et al - are doing it. Right Before Our Very Eyes.

KISS - Keep It Simple, Stupid - seems to be the way the extreme right likes to operate. Fact - input - details - open access - truth ... all those things need to be packaged in some flowery spin lines, then given to that silly little hoard of non-thinking folks known as voters. Heck, what do they know about what we want ... they elected us ... let us run the show.
