You need to work smarter and spend more wisely so that you too can enjoy organic eggs and milk. They are better for you and for growing children. Our son and his family are organic farmers providing great foodstuffs at farmers' markets and through a CSA. Don't prevent anyone from buying their excellent products.

The very first paragraph of the Wisconsin WIC Approved Foods list says Organic foods are permitted. So, I'm very confused where you deducted they're not allowed under this bill.

OK, I agree that there are those who abuse the system and there are those who do not. To those who do not, I have no issue paying taxes to help, but I really don't believe that soda, chips and other assorted "junk" should be paid for with tax dollars. On the same hand, I think it is plain stupid that toothpaste, toilet paper and other hygiene products are not included. What I believe to be fair and just, is simple. Dairy, produce and select meats (no steaks or "low grade" meat). If you want cheap burger, hot dogs, etc., you need to buy it with your own money. If you want Oreo cookies or Froot Loops or juice boxes... buy it.. with your own money. I am willing to help with food that is not filled with a list of ingredients that I cannot pronounce.

To those who do abuse the system... You are the scum of the earth. You take from those who actually need the help. GET A JOB!

Now for the reason I believe our elected corporate sponsors say that brown eggs and sharp cheddar are not to be included... in one word, Monsanto.

If you want the system changed, then you need to change the system. Stop electing corporate sponsors.

This bill is an embarrassment, organic food is NOT junk food. Despicable.

Like you, I have often been reduced to purchasing bargain brands because of funds - and maybe a few years ago, would have written a post such as yours. I think that now, when we have seen the problems junky processed foods wage on our population in regards to obesity, diabetes and other health concerns, that letting those on assistance choose more healthy options is really in OUR best interest.

The poor will only get sicker -and require more assistance - if they can not choose better options. That means more costs to you and me in the long run. Yes, working folks can not always buy "organic" or "free range" and I doubt many folks on food assistance still won't either because of the cost; they will want their SNAP funds to go further. But I think this law will only relegate people into having to eat unhealthy food.

I find it rather funny how many people seem vehemently angry about the poor receiving benefits wherein they still have some degree of freedom to choose what they eat.

I'm actually rather proud that I help those who cannot help themselves simply by paying my taxes, and particularly proud that recipients are given the dignity of choice. If you are a Christian (or even just pretend to be at Christmas), try to remember that charity is a virtue, and paying your taxes is the least and laziest you can do to help.

It's also worth noting that programs that reduce poverty also reduce crime and disease, so if you're not a Christian and instead believe in might-makes-right objectivism, you're still benefiting from these programs by buying a safer, more stable society.

These restrictions aren't a big deal, but the more we treat the poor like animals, the less dignity we have ourselves.

I am so amazed at people calling others on Foodshare 'lazy' and 'go get a job'. I have three PT jobs, and also two kids. The benefits that I get doesn't just go towards what I eat, but towards what my kids eat as well. Why should they not have a choice of eating healthy food items because they are poor? Don't you want them to be healthy individuals, who would grow up to not be struggling with poor diet induced diseases? Seriously! Are we living in a society or what? Do you also complain about your tax dollars going towards roads that you probably would never drive on? How about keeping a track of all the places where you don't drive and then complaining about your tax dollars going towards it. Or how about making sure the city is putting out more fires in rich neighborhoods, because I am sure they are contributing more towards the tax money. Most food share recipients are either the elderly or little kids and child poverty is highest in the US compared to all other industrialized countries. Read something and get educated before you start complaining about 'lazy poor people' with multiple jobs struggling to make ends meet. I have no problem with restrictions on junk food, but what about kids who are lactose intolerant, 'American cheese singles' are not healthy either! Not to mention that being jewish, we can only eat food that is kosher and with all these restrictions, we would have to plain eliminate certain stuff from our diet, or pay it out of pocket, which would put strain on all other aspects of our lives. But of course, because we are poor, we should be happy that we are even getting food and then be subject to all health issues that come with poor diet, because we had the misfortune of being poor. Too bad right. Seriously what kind of selfish, self centered people are you?

Use some logic, friend. Not every person who gets benefits is this cookie cutter image you speak of. If I get a job, I will have to get childcare. Childcare is extremely expensive, it would take my entire check and would not leave my WORKING husband and I with any extra - but it would take away from ME raising MY children and would be paying for strangers to do it. How does this make ANY sense? Here, take my money AND my precious time with my children.... I'll go exhaust myself for no reason.

Sorry you are too proud to receive benefits, but if you are working you are paying for those benefits via taxes. Not to mention the years and years I DID work before having kids, and also put toward that.

If I am receiving benefits to help me raise my family, I don't want to feed them generic brands all the time. Do you know what cellulose is? It's WOOD PULP, and it is what the generic brands use in place of "expensive ingredients" to keep the price down. If I am getting help to raise my kids, I am going to do the best damn job I can do...and I'm sure as hell not feeding them wood pulp.

Quit whining and grow a soul

    Impeach the idiots!

  • Wisconsin Bill Would Treat Organic Milk, Sharp Cheddar, Brown Eggs as "Junk Food"   11 years 5 weeks ago

You have just shown us that as a freedom loving American you enjoy the right to have a choice. People that receive food assistance have a much, much, smaller budget than you. Just because they can buy better things than value brand food doesn't mean they actually do. I've seen first hand the idiots who waste what they have, yet they were much more rare than the people who clipped every coupon, stocked up at every sale, and shopped smart.

The second thing you have shown is your poor reading comprehension ability. "Quit whining and get a job", are you serious? Did you read the same article as me? It points out that 858,000 people from WI are on food stamps, and that Walker has failed to create the 250,000 jobs he promised since 2010. That means a solid 1/3 of the people on food stamps who more than likely want a job can't even get one because jobs are unavailable.

"Quit whining and get a job" has to be the most insulting thing you could say to your fellow Americans who are making an honest struggle to get by.

How pathetic that this topic would be used to produce a class war. I do not receive food benefits but I will tell you as a disabled person that has worked over 35 years, paid taxes, and now because of the cost of living have to really stretch those buckos; I choose organic because they are, really, in the long run, less expensive. We all pay for it on one end or the other. Either you eat a little less and eat good, nutritious food and avoid some medical bills; or you eat processed crap and pay the doctor. I have chosen to stay as healthy as I can and because someone is getting assistance they should be able to choose for themselves and not be forced to purchase processed crap! This is what would be done with this law. You get just so much money and must be used for food. I can see not allowing snacks and sodas and such but the person should be able to choose organic if they want.

Your unwillingness to use your food budget to buy certain foods is not a reason to prevent me from doing so.

I'm guessing that (given your argument using the criminal stores & FS recipients buying alcohol) you're also in favor of banning self-defense tools for everyone just because a few criminals use them to harm innocent citizens. (The number of crimes committed using guns is something like 1/100th of the number of times citizens use guns to defend themselves.)

  • Wisconsin Bill Would Treat Organic Milk, Sharp Cheddar, Brown Eggs as "Junk Food"   11 years 5 weeks ago

Why is it any concern of yours if the person ahead of you chooses to spend $8 on a small tray of sushi (maybe for a celebration?) instead of 2 dry pounds of beans, 2 dry pounds of brown rice, and some fresh or frozen vegetables?

That person has either saved up some of their benefits for a treat, or is going to be facing too much month at the end of their food. Either way, it's their choice.

If someone wants to feel like they're eating more healthfully by buying non-gmo or non-chemical foods, and they understand that they'll be eating less, why is that a problem? Most of us should eat less.

Notice that soy milk would also be prohibited. It's healthier for us than cow milk. And since you can't get goat milk in gallons, people would be limited to drinking cow milk with all its moral & chemical problems.

  • Wisconsin Bill Would Treat Organic Milk, Sharp Cheddar, Brown Eggs as "Junk Food"   11 years 5 weeks ago

I live there too - report them

If you know that those stores are committing fraud, REPORT THEM!
Report the people who are misusing foodshare.
Fraud costs all of us money, so rooting it out leaves more money for those of us who need it. Send the criminals to prison & they'll never be able to get foodshare again.

For the VAST majority of items, it is not legal to buy anything other than food with foodshare.
(There are exceptions, but they are very rare and do NOT include drugs, of which nicotine & alcohol are the most commonly used.)

  • Wisconsin Bill Would Treat Organic Milk, Sharp Cheddar, Brown Eggs as "Junk Food"   11 years 5 weeks ago

    defending health
"you really have no right to complain. I mean would you rather have nothing or the regular food everyone else eats"

People are always allowed to speak up in defense of their own health.
And while some of what's proposed to be prohibited is really junk food, some of the required things are junk food too.

I mean seriously - you want me to be able to buy single-serving juicy-juice boxes which are nutritionally worthless and per-ounce much more expensive than buying a half-gallon of just about any juice?
Or you want to force me to eat "American cheese" (crap) instead of being allowed to buy real Wisconsin cheeses?
The white eggs I agree with, because they're no different nutritionally from brown eggs. It's just a different breed of chicken. But organic or free-range are more nutritious.

"working people paying into that system cannot even afford to eat that well why should those getting handouts"

    a) those "handouts" are the tax money I've paid into the system coming back to me

    b) you can make the same choices with your grocery budget that I do with mine. It doesn't matter where the money comes from.

    c) my food habits didn't change much when I had to go on foodshare. Yes, I buy less fish & other meat, and less of things like orange juice. But overall I've always been frugal whether it's my original money or my recycled money. Eating lower on the food chain is less expensive & healthier.

  • Wisconsin Bill Would Treat Organic Milk, Sharp Cheddar, Brown Eggs as "Junk Food"   11 years 5 weeks ago

What does it matter how they spend their little funds. If they chose to get all organic, they will just be able to buy less of it. It's not like they get a voucher for a carton of eggs, they get a $5 food stamp to use. Just because a family falls on hard times should not mean they are no longer entitled to eat Cheddar cheese or gluten free bread. This is america, let they worry about their own budget. Worry more about the lazy minority gaming the system that about the family that have found they need to rely on help.

  • Wisconsin Bill Would Treat Organic Milk, Sharp Cheddar, Brown Eggs as "Junk Food"   11 years 5 weeks ago

"I am limited to them because my budget limits me"
If you have (as an example) $200 per month for food, you can spend it in any way you choose.

If you buy something of better quality in one area, you are choosing to buy lesser quality (or quantity) elsewhere... just as someone who uses foodshare does.

I regularly buy from the 99c old produce bin at Woodman's (used to be 79c until very recently). I'll buy store brand beans (canned & dry), store brand rice, store brand spices, store brand canned vegetables; most of what I buy is under $2/lb so that when I do buy higher quality foods I have the money to do it.

So yes, I do occasionally use my foodshare money to buy meat, or cream, or a cake mix, or juice, or tea, or even cookies. For my birthday I buy a bag of shrimp or a piece of salmon. But I've scrimped on other foods in order to do it.

And BTW, I'd love to be able to get a job which would allow me to support myself. Finding a job at all is hard, finding one with a living wage and healthcare benefits is proving next to impossible.

  • Wisconsin Bill Would Treat Organic Milk, Sharp Cheddar, Brown Eggs as "Junk Food"   11 years 5 weeks ago

You are assuming that people receiving foodstamps are not working. Every single person I worked with at my previous job, that had children, still qualified for food assistance even while working full time. That should be more appalling then someone buying a six pack of soda with their benefits.

  • Wisconsin Bill Would Treat Organic Milk, Sharp Cheddar, Brown Eggs as "Junk Food"   11 years 5 weeks ago

Maybe if you were to get a better job you wouldn't have to buy the value brand kick rocks and mind your business. People who recieve food share is not lazy. This information comes from the foolish ones

  • Wisconsin Bill Would Treat Organic Milk, Sharp Cheddar, Brown Eggs as "Junk Food"   11 years 5 weeks ago

Dear "sir," (and I use the term loosely...

I work hard for my money too, and have, when times were bad, or in between jobs, used Food Stamps. Money that I had already been contributing to via the taxes I paid.

I also tend to put a higher value on foods that have ingredients that I can pronounce. I save a little extra each month to ensure that my children are not eating pesticide-laden foods, or toxic chemicals. And that's my choice as a parent.

"Quit whining and get a job..." (first off, you spelled it incorrectly, and secondly, when was the last time you looked for a job? In this economy, you'd be surprised who is and who is not on food stamps.)

Instead of whining yourself, what are your solutions? If a woman has a child, and the only option is a job that pays LESS per week than the cost of living, should she just suck it up and feed her child saltine crackers and water? Are you aware that a minimum wage job, at 40 hours per week, which most employers will NOT offer, because then they'd have to offer benefits, which no employer wants to do. On average, the monthly rental of an apartment is $1000-$200, depending on location, size, etc. The frugal amount one can spend on utilities per month is approximately $150.00 (and that's being frugal). Continuing the frugal theme, you can feed a family of 4 for about $400.00 per month in an urban metropolis. Then there's daycare - the cheap daycares are about $200.00 per week (AT BEST). A monthly transportation card (cheaper than a car!) is about $100.00 per month. Add it up, on the cheap end? BARE bones to just eek by, and heaven forfend you get sick, or your kid needs to go to the doctor, or you want to eat more than beans and rice, is about $2,500.00.

If you are making minimum wage, at a rate of $7.25-$8.25 (higher in an urban metropolis such as NYC or Chicago), you're getting about $300.00 GROSS per week. Which is about $1100.00 per MONTH, and that's BEFORE taxes.

So you do the math, sir. There's something wrong with this country when we demand folks get a job, but aren't willing to pay them to cover their BASIC needs.

  • Wisconsin Bill Would Treat Organic Milk, Sharp Cheddar, Brown Eggs as "Junk Food"   11 years 5 weeks ago

Sounds like a good argument, but sadly, it's not. One of the great lies of our time is that poor sit around and have gourmet items at taxpayer expense, while hard-working Americans foot the bill. It's a lie. While it's true that some folks do game the system the vast majority don't; overwhelmingly most would prefer to make their own living. And those on assistance who choose to eat organic, whether for health reasons or just because they want to, do so at a cost: that assistance won't stretch as far if it's spent on higher ticket organic items. So there's a trade-off built in to the equation. News flash: most welfare recipients don't eat the fancy stuff as they need to stretch every penny. So if they occasionally buy almond butter or organic produce that should be up to them.

  • Wisconsin Bill Would Treat Organic Milk, Sharp Cheddar, Brown Eggs as "Junk Food"   11 years 5 weeks ago

Milwaukee and know for a fact there are shops on the north side of town that will accept food stamps/foodshare towards the purchase of alcohol. Not hard to figure out what they buy in a liquor store when they come out with a brown paper bag lol

  • Wisconsin Bill Would Treat Organic Milk, Sharp Cheddar, Brown Eggs as "Junk Food"   11 years 5 weeks ago

Who cares where the money he has goes? The point is when you get $200 a month in food plus whatever other benefits you get you really have no right to complain. I mean would you rather have nothing or the regular food everyone else eats?
