You and the Supremes Call to Be Rescheduled

U.S. Supreme Court spiral staircaseThe Center for Media and Democracy's PRWatch is launching a free seminar series for spin-watchers like you. Our first one was scheduled for this week, and was going to focus on the new vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court and what it means for everyday people who are concerned about the Citizens United decision and its aftermath.

This audio seminar was canceled due to unforeseen technical/logistical problems.

In the future, we plan to provide an opportunity to:

  • Find out insider details about choosing and confirming a lifetime appointee to the Court.
  • Learn about how the next justice may influence legal policies you care about.
  • Ask Lisa your questions about the Supreme Court and Citizens United.
  • Hear about ways to join the fight against corporations controlling our democracy.

CMD's new Executive Director, Lisa Graves, previously served as the Chief Counsel for Nominations for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee and as Deputy Assistant Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice, working with the White House on judicial selection in the Clinton Administration. Her plain-spoken but deeply researched analysis of public policy issues has been featured on CNN, Free Speech TV, and Democracy Now! and credited in the New York Times, The Nation, The Progressive, and Vanity Fair and by numerous journalists over the past decade.

Our plan is for these audio and web seminars not to be a one-way lecture, but a conversation between you and Lisa about the Court and the battles ahead.

This is one of the new ways we at CMD hope to say thank you for your support and discuss what we can do, together, to fight against spin and for better policies!

Re: conf call cancellation

An email cancellation announcement to those registered to join the conf call would have been ... professional courtesy, as would info on the date and time of the re-schedule. Having to look to the website for above is poor planning and poorer execution, which may affect perceptions of expertise. I wonder if I'm the only person annoyed to have attempted to log-in to the call and gotten error messages, before heading back to the CMD website to find the cancellation?

That said, I still look forward to Lisa's comments.

The Supreme Court and Democracy

I don't see how having an unelected body whose decisions cannot be appealed, is in any way compatible with the basic principles of democracy. In any democratic form of government, supreme power is vested in the hands of the people, not in the hands of a supreme deity, supreme tyrant, supreme monarch, or supreme court. The framers weren't ignorant men--they were oligarchs who knew the precise meaning of the word supreme.

"Supreme"

Dear Mark:

The process for appointing Supreme Court justices and their lifetime, king-like, tenure is indeed anti- or counter-democratic.

There are increasing calls to remove life tenure from justices, especially after the radical decision by the five guys in the majority in the Citizens United case.

Thanks for your comment! I hope you can join the call! Lisa
