This past week was a busy one on Capitol Hill, as both the House and Senate were in session all five days. To summarize the items which were debated and considered on the floor, we will turn to TheWeekInCongress. As we first told you earlier this week, Congresspedia will be cross-posting stories covered on this site (a project of Sunlight friend Robert McElroy) at the end of each week in which at least one chamber was in session. In this week's issue, the following developments in Congress were covered:
- The Senate has continued to debate a bill which would implement some of the 9/11 commission’s security recommendations.
- The House passed several bills relating to water management. It reauthorized grants to municipalities and states to control sewer overflows, and also authorized the Secretary of the Interior to fund recycling projects in western U.S. The chamber also extended a program authorizing federal funding for alternative water projects. Soon, it will consider an additional measure to provide technical assistance grants to nonprofit organizations for the purpose of providing assistance to rural and small municipalities in dealing with wastewater infrastructure.
- The House passed a measure to fund its standing and select committees. The funds represent a raise from the previous year.
- The House authorized the Marion Park Project to establish a memorial for Brigadier General Francis Marion, who fought in the Revolutionary War.
- The House approved a resolution this week honoring the life and achievements of Dr. John Garang de Mabior, founder of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Sudan, and another supporting the goals of International Women's Day.
