  • Take Action This Week on Banking!   14 years 10 weeks ago

It looks like Congress is snagged again. But, as consumers we can DO SOMETHING! WITHDRAW WHATEVER FUNDS YOU CAN from the big banks and put them in your local bank or credit union. If thousands/millions of people did this we might see some action. It has to come from the people. It isn't going to come from the Congress.

Imagine government not playing nanny. That's a great concept that should be returned to the U.S.A. Once Big Pharma can figure how to make money in those countries the nanny state will arrive like it did in the good old U.S.A. Big Pharma will pay front groups to terrorize the populace with junk science and scare tactics to convince the uninformed masses they should be buying pharmaceuticals.

  • Lessons Learned From Tobacco Control Should be Applied to Climate Policy   14 years 10 weeks ago

The Issue is quite serious for those people who does not think about business and industries. You can see that not much governments have the courage to take keep a strict ban on the use of tobacco just because they are not ready to loose the revenue that it gives. For keeping the climate intact no government is ever ready to control any of the industries why? Revenue and growth will be affected. So what people want is money and growth and they are not worried about saving the planet.

I think it is always good how some stars speak out and represent the mass majority about a certain issue. I'm sure financial reform is something that everyone will be interested in and would want to make their voices heard. Money is not something that can remain wasted.

Gee...propagating military effectiveness? This happens everywhere, such as in Aceh a couple of years ago. Indonesian military officials once told the press about a round up against a small Aceh Free Movement insurgents camp which they claimed as successful by deploying only 40 men-strong special forces. The truth was the Indonesian military sent a few hundreds of troops and bombarded the camp with low quality missile artillery. Of course the Indonesians won the battle, the insurgents were so few compared to their huge number.

  • Who Is Bankrolling the League of American Voters?   14 years 10 weeks ago
    Why

    Why:
Does the US spend more than any other nation?
Do we have health care that is equal to Cuba?
Does no other nation try the US system of Health Care?

Because it is broken and does not work unless you have unlimited wealth or a 'Cadillac' Insurance plan.

It is not about government size, debt, or by some bizarre turn of illogic - socialism.

The business ethic continues to get nastier.
Selling unhealthy products which and more profitable, marketing to kids, fine print advertisements and contracts, merchandising environmentally, wasteful products, deceptive advertising, shock entertainment/commercials sell, but soil social standards, credit gouging. . . .

Should free enterprise be this free?

The name appeared spelled two ways, "Marjah" and "Marja," in an article on Common Dreams http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2010/03/08-4

In the article cited for this piece, however, they stuck to the spelling of Marja.
I will correct it to be consistent. Thanks for the feedback.

how much attention to the facts is paid in mainstream political discourse these days? I suspect you may have read Chomsky and his imitators, so let's be honest. does the right-wing media, the Republican caucus on the Senate and Hourse of Representatives, or, for that matter, the Democratic caucus care about the facts (and just the facts)? A consensus conclusion among climate scientists about the cause of global warming has clearly been established, and they continue to monitor the world's climate in an attempt to stay current and publish their findings. Meanwhile, their opponents are busy intimidating them and illegally hacking into their e-mail (just prior to the Copenhagen conference).

in a similar display of contempt for both civil liberties and polite political discourse in this country, the right has adopted, as standard operating procedure, harassment and intimidation of abortion providers in this country. As a result, there's a dearth of abortion providers in many areas of this country. If one side of the aisle is determined to resort to such tactics on a routine basis in the practice of politics and the other is not, historical situations can be used to predict which shall prevail.

I have Citi NRI account for th epast 10 years with Citibank. Recently I noticed a deduction of INR1.44 for some educaiton cess and not sure why and its deducted based on the service charge.. When I called the customer service, they begging "sir its just one rupeee sir and its going for education..." Iam not sure whose education is going and where and when and how.. so I asked to confirm if I authorized to deduct the amount and they cannot able to provide a proper answer even after 4 days. Try to reach some managers and that indain call centers no managers at work! US Govt paying big bucks for bailout money to citibank and no managers!
Waiting for resposne from the managers and lets take a legal action on Citi! Its un-ethic to deduct amount without knowing customer. Its called cheating, robbing in plain words!

  • CMD's Wendell Potter to Appear on Bill Moyers' Journal   14 years 10 weeks ago

I have been following you Mr. Potter early on in this debate re health care... I admire your courage to speak out and I respect you tremendously.

The tremendous amount of criticisms that have been transmitted via the airways do not in any way reflect the majority American view in this regard. I strongly believe that our media has failed us in a big way by allowing the untruths and misrepresentations to occur on the large scale that it has. It's my view the media has been paid a handsome sum of money to do so. This is why the President, who should be allowed to focus on many other issues facing our country, has had to get out there to communicate the message of the importance of health care reform directly to the people himself. I have written to the President many times to applaud him in his overall efforts since taking office. The intelligence he demonstrates every time he's in the public domain reminds me why he is and should be President.

What I find to be increasingly unacceptable and disgusting is the nonnews and fact-driven content full of misinformation that is communicated on a daily basis through our media. I hope this issue is addressed with some sincerety and urgency NOW.

Again, thank you for your voice and your honesty. Now that I have found the website, I will check in frequently.

    thank you, Jacque

Responding with violence is giving these elements of the American right-wing exactly what they want - a fight on their terms. It would also mean a suspension of any real public discussion on global warming based on facts, which is again, what I suspect these elements really want.

I agree that they must be monitored and documented.

But the moment the rest of society cedes the debate/discussion/problem-solving components of our public discourse - however flawed they may be - to the right-wing, then we've all lost. We must never resort to violence as a means of winning any debate, but we must not also let hatred and violence get in the way of said debate.

  • Rick Berman Attacks the Humane Society   14 years 10 weeks ago

I so glad you "like your dove BBQ'd!

That's about the only fact you've gotten right so far. Nancy, I know you like Dove, but you really must stop getting "facts" from meat and tobacco industry front groups... The mink you are referring to (released by the "terrorists you are referring to), ultimately survived. It is a fact that mink (even one's raised in captivity on filthy fur farms) are very adaptable and do survive in the wild.

I am guessing that it wouldn't have bothered you if the same animals had "ultimately died" buy being suffocated, strangled or electrocuted up the annus (a common method of execution on fur farms)?

"Most fur-bearing animals are raised in fur ranches with as many as 100,000 wild animals in a single facility. They are kept in cramped, dingy, waste soaked cages where many suffer or perish from dehydration, starvation, disease or self-mutilation. These animals do not receive even minimal protections, as the handling and killing of cage raised, fur bearing animals is not regulated by any U.S. laws. Many ranch raised animals are anally or vaginally electrocuted. A metal conductor is lodged in the animal's throat and an electric prod is shoved inside the rectum, transmitting a 240 volt shock. The conscious animal convulses for two or more minutes before succuming to a massive heart attack. To minimize expenses, animals have their necks broken; are injected with strychnine or asphyxiated with carbon monoxide from engine exhaust." http://www.furkills.org/furfarming.shtml

Releasing these poor animals was also instrumental in helping to shut down that filthy industry.

I am guessing that it doesn't bother you that mink, fox, companion animals and sometimes children, are killed/ injured in steel leg hold traps. I am guessing that it does not phase you that 25 % of them escape by chewing their own legs off... I am guess that you or your "ilk" wouldn't dream of complaining about animals, wild life and pets taking three days to die in steel traps?

"Millions of coyote, raccoon, bobcats and other species are caught in the wild using spring traps with metal teeth that shatter their bones. Animals can linger in excruciating pain for days on the trap line without water or food until the trapper returns to crush, shoot, suffocate or drown them. Two to 10 times as many non target animals (dogs, cats, deer, birds, livestock) are caught in the traps. About one quarter of trapped animals escape by chewing their own limbs off." http://www.furkills.org/trapping.shtml

Who do you think your kidding? Canned hunting is a "myth"? I happen to live in a county that actually has a fox pen, they have been trying to close it down for years. Support your local no kill? And what about the other animals? Support spay/neuter and end breeding for profit.

According to Nancy "People who support HSUS support the total annihilation of Companion Animals."

What? People who support HSUS support the annihilation of puppy mills, dog fighting, chained dogs, etc. How does this translate? Are you telling me that none of the 10 million members of HSUS have pets or work with animals? I have two dogs and three cats and volunteer in a shelter walking dogs. Occasionally, shelters get former hunting dogs dumped there by their compassionate owners because they didn't like to hunt or were "defective" in some way. Last year we got 60 puppy mill breeding dogs who had been abused for years.

Black Beauty Ranch is evil now too?

"The Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch is a world-renowned animal sanctuary in Murchison, Texas. Its nearly 1,300 acres are home to more than 1,200 domestic and exotic animals, many of whom have been rescued from near-death situations such as slaughterhouses, biomedical research laboratories, and trophy hunting ranches. Others are discards from circuses or roadside zoos, or were former victims of the exotic pet trade. Still others have come from public lands where they were threatened with extermination by the federal government.

Bison and cattle, horses and burros, antelope and apes, camels and llamas, all have permanent, safe homes at the ranch, which was founded in 1979 by Cleveland Amory, author and animal advocate." http://www.blackbeautyranch.org/

Yea, I can see what you mean Nancy. This is all very disturbing.

According to Nancy: "The total devastation of the family farm and our meat supply. And they don't even suport a single shelter in the entire country. All their money is spent on lobbying for their Animal Rights agenda."

What planet do you reside on? The "total devastation" of the family farm, has already happened, thanks to groups like CCF who get their operating funds from Tyson Foods, Cargill and Pilgrims Pride... You think these filthy operations are "family farms"? They abuse animals, the environment and beat their own workers when they try to strike.

    http://www.ufcw.org/press_room/index.cfm?pressReleaseID=183

Cargill is being sued for an e-coli outbreak which severely injured several people and permanently crippled a 22 year old woman.

    http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/food/2009-12-04-cargill-suit_N.htm?csp=outbrain&obref=obnetwork

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/04/health/04meat.html?_r=2&em

Besides, meat is not good for you and it's bad for the planet, but then I am guessing that you don't believe in the "myth" of environmentalism and global warming either. Even if you can't wrap you brain around the fact that "our meat supply", was once living breathing beings, capable of feeling pain who have been abused, degraded and tortured from birth, at least drop the "family farm" propaganda. CCF and USDA subsidies that have destroyed farm communities by supporting greedy corporate farming.

You and your "ilk" are the "terrorists", because you terrorize. Wayne Pacelle has done as much for animals as any one person has ever done, regardless of whether he "likes his girl friend's cat". Please.

I could go on, but that's enough for now.

I commend the personnel at this website for providing this important information to the public. In Germany during the 1920's and early 1930's, the storm troopers (SA) provided a similar service, i.e. intimidation of political opponents, for Hitler and the Nazi party during their rise to power. In light of the tendency of the American right to resort to violence these days, e.g. the murder of an abortion provider, perhaps its time for the left to consider developing its own paramilitary organization, as did the German Social Democratic party, to combat the right-wing thugs. I'm curious about the source(s) of funding for this campaign of intimidation. In any event, these threats should be taken seriously.
