The mere fact, if true, that "most of Knipp's performance cities are located in the South", tells me nothing about how popular or unpopular he may be. Nor in itself does it even demonstrate that he's "more" popular in that region than others, since there could be any number of explanations for his choice of venues. In fact the evidence suggests that, far from being "popular", Knipp is essentially unknown outside the circle of drag enthusiasts and homosexual club patrons.
Anyway, Toronto, Boston and Pittsburgh now qualify as "deep South"? And Austin, New Orleans, Ft. Lauderdale and Tampa/Clearwater (their latitude notwithstanding)? At best your list is 50/50. Not that it matters since your syllogism is incomplete to begin with.
I respectfully suggest that you and your sociologist pal [a] take a course in basic logic and [b] examine your own ignorant prejudices.
To begin with, David Pilgrim, the sociologist whose collection is the basis for the Jim Crow Museum, has written that Knipp is popular in the deep South, as have other reporters familiar with his act. For example, Keith Boykin reports that "[http://www.keithboykin.com/arch/000488.html| most of Knipp's performance cities are located in the South] ... From Pittsburgh, it's off to Boston, Austin, New Orleans, Memphis, Jackson, Mobile, Ft. Lauderdale and Clearwater, all by the end of the year. He also plans to be in Toronto, Columbia, Augusta, Savannah and Houston soon." As for the notion that all stereotypes are "equally objectionable," that's just ridiculous and certainly doesn't follow from "my logic."
I wonder what evidence you can offer for your claim that Charles Knipp's performances are "popular in the deep South"? Where did you get that? I'd suggest you're perpetuating some stereotypes yourself.
Though drag performances are hardly unheard of, it's fair to say that drag queens are not exceptionally or unusually "popular in the deep South".
Indeed, Knipp claims his fans include "Patti Labelle, Margaret Cho, RuPaul, Lipsynca, Jimmy James and Don Imus."
In any event, are not all drag characters based on stereotypes of women and therefore equally objectionable, by your logic?
Although Aunt Jemima was a fictional character,
she wasn't just a face on a box. She was played by
actual women including, Brown County, Ohio native
Rose Washington Parks,1901-1969, during the 1950s.

Rosa Washington Riles -- Aunt Jemima born in Brown County
By T. J. TUCKER

Aunt Jemima www.ripleyk.12.oh.us/ripley/historicripley/aunt_jemima.htm.
Rosa Washington Riles, better known as "Aunt Jemima" was one of Brown County's most noted but least known natives. Although, the character of Aunt Jemima has been often criticized for its stereotypical portrayal of African-Americans, Rosa remains one of Brown County's most beloved daughters.
"Aunt Jemima" was born in 1901 as Rosa Washington near Red Oak, Brown County, Ohio. She was one of several children of Robert and Julie (Holliday) Washington and a grand-daughter of George and Phoeba Washington, all of whom, like her, are buried in the Red Oak Presbyterian Graveyard somewhat south of her birthplace. She died in 1969.
Rosa became "Aunt Jemima" in the 1950's. She was employed as a cook in the home of a Quaker Oats executive and went out for pancake demonstrations at her employer's request. This was following the death of Nancy Green, the former Aunt Jemima. The portrait of Rosa Washington showed a smiling, laughing, good-humored face that brought instant thoughts of delicious goodies and the anticipation of the stomach warming excellence of steaming hot pancakes smothered with fresh butter and maple syrup.
Rosa rose to fame because of her jovial personality, which so readily won fans and friends as she toured the United States annually giving her demonstrations. She often would do demonstrations in Ripley and Georgetown.
In the beginning of Rosa Washington's career as Aunt Jemima, the pancake mix was packaged and sold in one-pound covered cardboard cartons. At that period her portrait covered one entire side of the carton. Later redesigning of the packages reduced her portrait to a silver-dollar sized medallion in the upper left corner of the side of the box, and that is exactly how it can be found on the store shelves yet today. During the well advertised and well attended demonstrations, Aunt Jemima also promoted Log Cabin Syrup and Ball's Milk.
At various times along the way, advertising "gimmicks" such as salt and pepper shakers, penny banks and rag dolls were produced - all in the easily recognized form of the chubby Aunt Jemima.
Today, a collection of Aunt Jemima souvenirs and collector's items can be found at the Red Oak Church.
The late Glen Woods of Russellville, Ohio, gave this collection to the church in recognition of what Aunt Jemima had contributed to the people of the United States.
In honor of Aunt Jemima, an annual pancake breakfast is held at the church. The proceeds are used for the upkeep of the old part of the cemetery next to the church. Those attending often visit the grave of Rosa and reflect upon her life and its importance. She so successfully concealed her greatness, that few today who pass rapidly along the Ripley-Russellville Pike (Route 62/68) realize that the birth site and burial place of "Aunt Jemima" can be seen from that highway.
Her daughter, Mrs. Ruth Sugg, who lives in Cincinnati travels from home to Red Oak every Memorial Day and Christmas to place flowers on the graves of her mother, her brothers and her grandparents and great-grand-parents.
(From research papers of the late Glenn Woods recorded on Ripley's Web site at www.ripleyk.12.oh.us/ripley/historicripley/aunt_jemima.htm.).
No biggie, but please revise the above
"a lot of kooks" sentence to read "while

Keep up the great work!!!!!
There's more on Wal-Mart's PR campaign. TAPPED's [http://www.prospect.org/weblog/archives/2005/09/index.html#007721|Garance Franke-Ruta writes],
"It's all in a day's work for [http://www.redstate.org/|RedState.org] co-founder Mike Krempasky, whom [http://walmartwatch.com/blog/archives/dirty_stores_dirty_tricks/|Wal*Mart Watch] reports is ginning up one of his patented online campaigns (remember Rathergate.com) -- on behalf of the low-paying behemoth via his new post at P.R. giant [[Edelman]], which represents Wal*Mart."
The Justice Department's e-mail may have been prompted by a [http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/berlau200509080824.asp|misleading column] in the September 8 issue of National Review Online, which chastised the Sierra Club and other environmental groups for suing to halt the corps' 1996 plan to raise and fortify 303 miles of Mississippi River levees in Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas. As Mitchell notes, however, "The levees that broke causing New Orleans to flood weren't Mississippi River levees." The Sierra Club has issued its [http://www.sierraclub.org/pressroom/releases/pr2005-09-16.asp|own response] to the National Review smear.
Check out The Hill's article about Susan Neely's history: "[http://www.thehill.com/thehill/export/TheHill/Business/090605_mom.html|Security mom tackles obesity]." Neely is best know for helping create the "'Harry and Louise' TV commercials that she helped create while serving as senior vice president of the [[Health Insurance Association of America]]. One of the most successful issue-ad campaigns of all time, 'Harry and Louise' is widely credited with the derailment of then-President Bill Clinton's 1994 healthcare plan." Before joining ABA, Neeling shaped the communications strategy for the [[Department of Homeland Security]].
To carpet something is to cover it up. So if you're called on the carpet, you may have a frank discussion, but without risking any contact with the truth.
Carpet happens to be an Arabic word. Meaning a thick, heavy covering for a floor, usually made of woven wool or synthetic fibers; a rug. The value of the rug depends on the density of knots. Thanks to such propaganda artists as Karen Hughes or Karl Rove (The Architect and, if I dare say, the Intelligent Designer of smear campaigns), try finding the truth !
Besides, calling on the carpet is a King's thing. If you were to express your free will, Lord Dubya shalt punish thee down from his throne.
And oh. Carpet also happens to be a slang term referring to the putting green or fairway. The fact is you are more likely to find the King on a golf course than on his throne.

Hi, Terance,
You can find AI's talk page (or any other page) by using the search engine on our wiki, SourceWatch, at www.sourcewatch.org. The green navigation bar on the top left of your screen will take you right to the SourceWatch home page. In addition to searching, you can learn more about the site by checking out the "welcome, newcomers," "FAQ," "help," or other explanatory pages highlighted on the SW home page.

Forgive my ignorance, but can you tell me how to
find "the talk page of a regular SourceWatch
contributor, Artificial Intelligence (AI)."
I went to the site: http://www.ifi.unizh.ch/ailab/aiwiki/aiw.cgi/AIWiki
but couldn't locate the talk page.
Thanks, TC
Just did a quick search to see if the note is elsewhere on the web, and it's been posted on at least two other sites:
www.boiseguardian.com/2005/09/08/direct_from_ground_zero.html
www.commonblog.com/comments/2005/9/7/155439/2288/19#19
That, its use of GOP talking points, and the "friend of a friend" presentation (common to many urban legends) make me question it.
This email just showed up in my inbox today, it sounds a bit to polished to be real. "I smell a spin" does anyone what to verify this?

This note is from a girl who I work with named Robin. She's in Louisiana and amid all the turmoil there. When I read her story I got chills; this is horrible. I'm sending this to all of you to spread the word, PRAY. There are local churches where she lives who will be housing the homeless. Coleen
Here's her note:
** We have had a battery operated TV so we've been getting local channels focusing on the situation there and here. I'm just getting the "national perspective" and its *(&*&(*ing me off! First, this is not a racial thing. I'm sorry if all the reporters are seeing are black faces but if they would take their cameras to places like Slidell, Mandeville, Metairie and CHALMETTE! they would see a several thousand white faces being affected by this. Most of the tip of the boot that is Louisiana south and east of Baton Rouge is under water. Those people are stuck too waiting for help, dying, but all the news people can focus on is the Superdome.
Another misconception. The violence going on there is not the reaction of desperate people. Its typical New Orleans on any given Tuesday!!! Its a dangerous, dirty, drug infested place where the city police and city government is corrupt and useless. Volunteers are getting shot at and their cars vandalized. Helicopters are being shot at. Just another day in the city.
Another misconception. These poor people couldn't get out because they don't have cars. If the cameras show the city once the waters recede, you'll notice all the flooded out cars littering the streets. They couldn't all have been broken down before the storm hit . Yes, there are always people who do not have transportation. Part of making the call for a MANDATORY evacuation is that the city has to provide for transportation and/or shelter in the city. People stayed for the same reasons they always stay. They think the storm will turn and go in another direction. They think they can "ride it out." Or, they're just too (*&( lazy to pack up and leave.
Another misconception. The federal government was slow to respond. The president issued a state of emergency BEFORE the storm ever hit, unprecedented. This means that the full access of the federal government, be it military or civil, were at our governor's disposal. The levee broke early Monday afternoon. She did not call evacuationuntil Tuesday morning. You cannot call up National Guard units in 20 minutes. It takes time. The governor and mayor are in high CIA mode at the moment. The situation is bad here. Crime is becoming a problem in Gonzales and Baton Rouge where the evacuees are being housed. We live between the two cities and there is pistol on my desk shelf as I type (yes, I know how to use it). Helicopters flying overhead all day, gas is running out, stores shelves becoming empty. Its like a war zone. Our know both here and are staying here until the crime situation gets in control and I fear it will
get worse before it gets better. Pray for us. ** SO, that's all I'm
asking. SEND this to your friends and right now say
a prayer for the people going through this whole catastrophe. Thanks. Robin

Strange. America Supports You's Freedom Walk website isn't working today.
As if it weren't such a good idea to link the war in Iraq and 9/11 anymore.
As if it sounded like a sick Grey Pride : keep walking with us folks, we brought you war, we brought you social collapse, and we sure have lotsa good ideas for the years to come.
As if they suddenly feared no one would turn out. Don Rum can't even mobilize army people : he needs them to fish corpses in Iraq and Louisiana.
So because the site is down, people cannot register or enroll to enjoy their Freedom to Walk.

* an old graphic novel dealing with propaganda in an alternative and fascist UK - worth reading folks, especially if the book turns out to be as poorly adapted as "From Hell". After that, you won't read the same way the UK tabloïds' call for testimonies after London july bombings ("you're our ears, you're our eyes").
I have been hunting for some discussion of these "artifacts of the media" -- the ubiquitous reports of and quotes from eye-witnesses who supposedly were on the train right there and then, and told of the big jacket and something like wires coming out of it, and how he came running into the train with a terrified look on his face. These were not presented as police comments, yet suddenly, after seeing the camera footage, there is no curiousity about how such supporting evidence rose up to re-inforce the offical story of understandable police confusion.
I would have expected somebody to shine a light on this oddity to try to understand how such inaccuracies or fabrications become the universally received mental impression of the incident for most news readers. None of the articles about the revelations from the cameras have addressed the question of who supposedly gave this eye-witness account, and why was he hallucinating.
I know eye-witness reports are known to be unreliable, but I have a hard time believing that an eye-witness gave that report. Did somebody perhaps provide a pseudo-eyewitness to help shape the initial reports?
I received the forward today from a
