I was in a similar situation. Needing a transplant and having one 9 years prior, the insurance considered it experimental and not worth their 6 figures. I am still here 4 years later because one man gave his personal line of credit to the hospital to get me there on time. The insurance (AIG)eventually paid their measly amount -no where near the cost - but had I waited for them, I'm sure I wouldn't be here. I had leukemia with a very short window for treatment. By the time they approved it, I had already had my transplant. By the grace of God, 4 years later, I am alive and able to continue to raise my 4 children. So instead of a toy drive on Dec. 18th, I will be celebrating my 4th birthday as that was the day of my transplant in 2007. I am so sorry for this family and the loss that they have suffered.
